Name:
Zihui (Mary) Zhang
Position:
Summer Research Student at Wright Lab
What do you do here at Wright Lab?
As a summer student this year, I’m working with the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Group (RHIG) on
research and development for the future Longitudinal Forward Hadronic Calorimeter (LFHCal) for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). I have designed and built several hardware setups to support the testing of scintillator tiles and SiPMs that will be used for particle detection in the future hadronic calorimeter. Currently, my focus is on characterizing and investigating the properties of the scintillator tiles and SiPMs.

What is the most unique and/or exciting experience you’ve had here at Wright Lab?
Last summer, I helped prepare a workshop on cloud chambers for the Pathways to Science
program. Introducing cloud chambers to high school students as well as assisting them in
creating their own homemade versions of cloud chambers was interesting and rewarding. This summer, we learned about a new, more efficient method to produce the homemade cloud
chambers and I’m very excited for the students to try it and to witness the techniques
progressively improve.

What are you looking forward to in the coming year at Wright Lab?
In the coming year, I’m looking forward to continuing on the research and development for the
LFHCal as well as designing and creating more parts in the process. The Wright Lab Advanced Prototyping Center (APC) has become one of my favorite places in the lab as I love 3D printing and watching the laser cutting process, so I look forward to more of that to come.

What is something that people might not know about you that you’d like to share with the
community?
I am a big fan of Thai and Greek food.
