What do you do here at Wright Lab?

As a research and development mechanical technician at Wright Lab, I am currently primarily supporting Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics Paul Tipton’s ATLAS group. Specifically, I am involved in the fabrication and testing of stave cores, which are the basic building blocks for the high luminosity upgrade of ATLAS’s inner tracker detector. The cores provide both mechanical support and thermal management for the associated electronics. The  upgrade will produce more precise measurements that can test and refine our understanding of what makes up the universe.

What is the most unique and/or exciting experience you’ve had here at Wright Lab?

One of the most remarkable aspects of working at Wright Lab is the abundance of resources available to students, faculty, and staff. The lab offers numerous programs that foster a culture of collaboration and provide valuable learning experiences. Students have the opportunity to work closely with renowned researchers, enabling them to gain practical knowledge and contribute to cutting-edge projects. This access to mentorship and guidance greatly enriches the educational experience here. It’s truly inspiring to be part of a community that prioritizes knowledge sharing and supports the growth of its members.

What are you looking forward to in the coming year at Wright Lab?

Looking ahead to the coming year at Wright Lab, I am particularly eager to start stave core production for the ATLAS project. This phase represents a significant milestone in the two-decade long planning, and I anticipate it to be both challenging and rewarding. Each day brings new tasks and obstacles, ensuring that the work remains engaging and intellectually stimulating. I am excited to contribute my skills and knowledge to this crucial stage of the project and witness the progress we make as a team. The dynamic nature of the work at Wright Lab ensures that there will always be something to learn and achieve, fostering an environment of continuous growth and innovation.

What is something people might not know about you that you’d like to share with the community?

Outside of Wright Lab, I am a car enthusiast, who enjoys listening to different genres of music. Recently, I have reignited my dedication to start playing the piano. My goal is to eventually master Frederick Chopin’s Nocturnes. I find the ability to convey emotions through musical compositions to be a powerful and captivating experience. I hope to enhance my own musical expression and connect with others through music.
