What do you do here at Wright Lab?
Most of my day is spent in the J.W. Gibbs Professional Shop (Gibbs Machine Shop), which is in the former Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory (WNSL) accelerator space, 16 feet underground. From that perspective, many in the community may not even be aware that I exist until I’m needed to create parts for research projects, or when I make a cameo appearance at a holiday party, just in passing, or in the Wright Lab breakroom, where I occasionally surface from below to enjoy a better cup of coffee!

When a Wright Lab researcher has a great idea,  they will eventually want to create to make it become reality. That is where I will put my 44 years of experience to good practice. Here in the Gibbs Shop we assist the science community with all the required machining and fabrication needs to facilitate advances in research!  We always look forward to and embrace a good challenge!

What is the most exciting experience you’ve had here at Wright Lab?

Science and invention have always fascinated me, beginning during childhood, and as it still does and always will. I have been fortunate that my career path has exposed me to some very interesting people and developments through the years. I have touched just about every area of the sciences during my career. I enjoy being able to create things from concept to application. I must say that the physics and astronomy projects excite me the most.

What are you looking forward to in the coming year at Wright Lab?

I am looking forward to positive and productive interactions with the research teams and to continue to be an integral part of the development processes. How we evolve involves how we invent, innovate, and create and is what makes our world a happening place !

What is something that people might not know about you that you’d like to share with the community?

Being a musician, I enjoy a wide variety of music (depending on mood and spirit) including classical; bluegrass; swing; jazz; classic rock; fife and drum music; old time fiddle; other fiddle music such as Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton Fiddle, Cajun, etc. I play fife, drums, and fiddle–not an expert, but I do okay.

I also enjoy art, history, Netflix series, great food, craft beers, and riding my motorcycle. I am a professional Auctioneer (yes, I can do a fast chant) and I have my real estate license with a real estate auction company, but previously with Willaim Raveis in Guilford. Since 1996, I use my auctioneering skills mostly to raise monies at black tie galas for non-profits.

On a professional note, the order of my employment includes Yale University School of Medicine, CuraGen Corporation, 454 Life Sciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, and returning to Yale University at the Gibbs shop in 2013.  I have met a lot of brilliant and great people on this path and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to work alongside some of the world’s brightest people!  I also have an in-home machine shop business which keeps me busy.
