Monday, July 7 (3-5 PM EDT): Introductions, get-to-know-you bingo, and statistics of underrepresentation

The goal is professional development, including a discussion of obstacles students may encounter in the astronomy and physics environment, as well as suggested strategies for success. Students who attended in past years—mostly undergraduates but graduate students are also welcome—reported finding this workshop enlightening and useful.

Born in 1924, Evelyn Boyd Granville was the second African-American woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics from an American university, which she obtained from Yale in 1949. She had a long career in research and teaching, including work in celestial mechanics digital computer techniques for the Apollo program. She is the year 2000 awardee of the Yale Graduate School Alumni Association’s highest honor, the Wilbur Lucius Cross Medal. Our summer professional development workshop was named in her honor in recognition of her achievements and her inspiring example.

Each session will include ample time for Q&A and discussion. If you are interested in attending, please fill out this registration form: https://forms.gle/MxyZn8XNrXxwWngB9.
