2026 Summer Student Research Program at WL kickoff
Summer students, their advisors, and the Wright Lab community are all invited to gather together to kick off the 2025 Summer Student Research Program at Wright Lab with coffee, breakfast food, and casual interaction. A brief orientation for program participants will follow.
EHS Orientation for WL shops
The EHS shop orientation is offered on the first Wednesday of each month and is required to be taken once by anyone who would like to gain access and make use of the research and teaching shops at Wright Lab.
Tour of Wright Lab
This tour is open to students in the Summer Student Research Program at Wright Lab and new members of the Wright Lab and Yale Physics communities. Meet at the front entrance for a ~1 hour overview tour of the lab facilities and research program.
Introduction to Advanced Prototyping at Wright Lab
Advanced Instrumentation Development Center (AIDC) Director Jack DiSciacca will provide a brief overview of the advanced prototyping capabilities available at Wright Lab and the upcoming AIDC (opening for Fall 2026) in our meeting room, followed by demonstrations in the shop by Research Shop Supervisor Craig Miller.
Please note: this informational event does not provide access to the shops. For more information on steps to gaining access, please refer to our Facilities Page.
Tour of YQI superconducting qubit labs
Participants of the Summer Student Research Program at Wright Lab are invited to a tour of the superconducting quantum devices laboratories at YQI.
Responsible conduct in research and the use of AI
This is a brief presentation with Q&A, intended for participants in the Summer Student Research Program at Wright Lab, about how about to responsibly conduct research and use Artificial Intelligence.
Walking tour of Yale
Students in the Summer Student Research Program at Wright Lab are invited to join a guided walking tour of Yale University, starting from the Yale Visitor Center.
Quantum Sound at Weird Music Night
Quantum Sound, the first-ever music created and performed directly from measurements of superconducting qubits, created by YQI AiR Spencer Topel, will be performed at Weird Music Night with a brand new light show performed live by YQI AiR curator Florian Carle.
Weird Music Night offers a unique platform for musicians, artists, and performers to connect with audiences through sound, art, and experimentation. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience an eclectic lineup of acts that redefine the boundaries of performance. John O’Donnell, is the creator/curator/performer of this series.
Evening at Leitner Family Observatory and Planetarium
All participants of the Summer Student Research Program at Wright Lab are invited to an evening at LFOP, including a planetarium show and observing with telescopes, pending weather.
Applying to graduate schools panel
Undergraduates in physics and astronomy are invited to learn about applying to graduate schools from Yale faculty and current graduate students.
Mid-summer pizza lunch with the Wright Lab community
All members of the Wright Lab community and participants and mentors of the Summer Student Research Program at Wright Lab are invited to a mid-summer pizza lunch.
Yale University Library viewing of historical scientific books
Split between the Beinecke and Medical Historical Library, Yale has access to early editions of many milestones of achievement in physics. In this enrichment session, you will have the opportunity to see works with topics ranging from early materials science, astronomy and cosmology, physics, and mathematics, a total of 15 items.
Science Communication
“Science Communication” includes presentations about:
- Writing & publishing papers & abstracts
- Preparing for scientific conferences and presentations
- Communicating with the public about science
The event will conclude with a Q&A panel discussion.
Visit to QNT at SCSU
Participants of the Summer Student Research Program at Wright Lab are invited to visit the CT State Colleges and Universities Center for Quantum and Nanotechnology (QNT) at nearby Southern CT State University.
While on campus, participants will have lunch with the Research Fellows participating in the Werth Industry Academic Fellowship Program (Werth IAF Fellows) and will be provided a tour of the QNT and Southern’s Planetarium.
Outreach opportunity: Yale Pathways to Science Summer Scholars Discover the Invisible Universe at Wright Lab
Students in the Yale Pathways to Science Summer Scholars program will discover the invisible Universe at Wright Lab and interact with Wright Lab researchers with demonstrations and hands-on activities.
BB84 Protocol - Encryption & Quantum Communication
With the rise of quantum computing, it has become evident that our current encryption protocols to send secure communication are not adequate anymore. In this class, Florian Carle teaches how to send secure communication in a quantum world, using the BB84 protocol for a secure quantum key distribution. Students will learn about the protocol and then participate in hands-on small group activities to share secret key securely between each other (from Alice to Bob), and detect possible eavesdroppers (Eve).
Resumes and websites workshop
Learn how to recognize what makes a good résumé or CV, how to manage your online professional presence, and what tools you can use to help you make decisions about your grad school search. We’ll look at several faculty CVs, commonly-used professional profile websites, and library databases that can help you find information on departments, industries, companies, and more — whether you plan to go into academia, corporate, or nonprofit work.
“Designing slides to present scientific results” workshop
All students in the Summer Student Research program at Wright Lab are invited to workshop their presentation slides with WL postdocs, graduate students, and their peers. The workshop will last 1.5 to 2 hours.
Final presentations and closing luncheon
Please join us to hear what our student researchers have been doing this summer.
