Title: Where do I go from Yale?

Please join us for a “Where Do I Go From Yale?” event featuring a panel of Yale Physics and Astronomy alumni brought to you by the Graduate School Alumni Association, co-hosted by the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) and the Yale Physics Professional Development Organization (YPPDO).

Panelist Bios:

At Yale, Kelly Backes was a member of the HAYSTAC axion experiment with an emphasis on applying quantum sensing technology to dark matter detection. That work led her to her current position at the MITRE Corporation where she conducts application-focused research on a variety of quantum sensors and leads the superconducting sensors program. She has a particular interest in bridging the gap between laboratory grade quantum sensors and fieldable applications. She graduated from Yale in 2021 with a PhD in physics. She was also chair of the Advocacy Committee on the Graduate and Professional Student Senate.

Ran Duan is an executive vice president in the Newport Beach office of PIMCO and leads emerging markets analytics. He is also in the research group for PIMCO’s emerging markets portfolio committee. Prior to joining PIMCO in 2010, he worked in the interest rate derivatives quantitative research group at Barclays Capital and at Lehman Brothers. He has 18 years of investment and financial services experience and holds a Ph.D. in physics from Yale and a bachelor’s degree from Peking University.

Kaylea Nelson is the Director of Arts & Sciences Research Computing at the Yale Center for Research Computing, which supports the advanced computing needs of Yale’s research community. She leads the research computing facilitation team at the YCRC and ensures the YCRC meets the needs of the university researchers from the physical sciences, social sciences and humanities. Kaylea’s own research background is in computational cosmology, examining the effects of mergers and dynamical state on galaxy clusters. Beyond Yale, Kaylea is a co-chair of the Women in HPC Northeast Chapter and an active participant in CaRCC, Campus Champions, and CASC.

Moderator: Daisuke Nagai, Professor of Physics and of Astronomy at Yale

Hosts: Chin Yuan Ong (GSA), Tony Liu (YPPDO), Xiaowei Ou (YPPDO)

Lunch will be provided beginning at 10:45 a.m. for those who RSVP by 12 p.m. on Friday, April 11 at: https://forms.gle/Sa21Xe77bXAfijgNA

Yale Physics Professional Development Organization (YPPDO) is focused on providing physical science PhDs and postdocs with information, contacts, and resources on a range of career opportunities, especially outside academia. YPPDO talks are supported by the Yale Physics Department and Wright Laboratory.
