Professor Karsten Heeger and the PROSPECT Collaboration have recently completed fabrication and assembly of the Precision Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment (PROSPECT). PROSPECT was built at Wright Lab and is being installed on the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. PROSPECT is designed to detect the neutrinos that are a byproduct of HFIR’s neutron scattering capability and to make “incredibly precise measurements of neutrinos from a nuclear reactor as they change type. Past nuclear reactor experiments have resulted in measurements that depart from theory. The PROSPECT team has designed an experiment that can explore any discrepancies, eliminate possible sources of error, or even discover the sterile neutrino.” Read more about the experiment in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science article linked below.
