A Story of Physics at Yale
Yale and science - and physics - have been intertwined ever since the college's founding in 1701. As an institute founded to educate male students for "publick employment both in Church and State," Yale's rectors and presidents regarded natural philosophy as an important part of the classical curriculum. In the 19th century, as Yale became the defender of liberal education, science remained an integral part of all enrolled students' learning. The founding of the Scientific School in 1854 further strengthened Yale's commitment to science. Since then, Yale's physics has reflected the evolving field and how its members responded to their working worlds. Today, the diverse members of Yale physics carry out a wide range of research, teaching, and outreach programs. I tell a story of the history of physics at Yale from its founding to today, highlighting how science and the place shaped each other.
